What do You Like Most about Christmas Music?
To be honest, I don’t like most Christmas music because much of it can be pretty sugary, sappy, and overly sentimental. The other issue is that it is often overplayed. However, when the spirit strikes, I feel a sense of community that is evoked.
The Cheery Side of Christmas Music
While I am not a fan of much Christmas music, my taste is quite limited. The only one that can bring a smile to my face is 'War Is Over' by John Lennon. I especially enjoy the cover version by Eivír Pálsdóttir. It reminds me of a more positive perspective during the holiday period.
Picking Favorites: A Personal Nostalgia
Ironically, the music that doesn’t resonate with me is the one that makes me think of family and old lovers. Fond memories from years past sometimes bring tears, especially when I am alone. However, there are a few gems I appreciate, including 'Wonderful Christmas Time' by Paul McCartney, 'Last Christmas' by Wham!, 'Christmas Baby Please Come Home' by Darlene Love, and 'Jingle Bell Rock' by Bobby Helms. These songs bring a sense of joy and comfort, making me excited for the holiday season.
A Tribute to Classical Christmas Music
As a former member of a brass instrument ensemble and a woodwind ensemble, I have a special place in my heart for classical Christmas music. One of my favorite composers is Johann Sebastian Bach. His works, along with Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet, are standouts. I also hold a soft spot for American iconic Christmas music, such as songs performed by Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. It's not something I should be ashamed of, and it’s a sign of enjoying a timeless and beautiful art form.
The Festive and Nostalgic Atmosphere
While I may not have personal preferences, many people find great joy in the festive and nostalgic atmosphere that Christmas music creates. It often brings back cherished memories and adds a special touch to the holiday season. The moment Christmas ends, I can feel a sense of relief and joy, knowing I don’t have to hear the music for a while.
It’s fascinating to see how different people perceive Christmas music and the emotions it evokes. Some may love its festive cheer, while others may find it overly sentimental. Whatever your preference, the holiday season is a time for joy and reflection, and Christmas music plays a significant role in setting the tone.
So, let's embrace the music and the memories it brings, and enjoy the spirit of the holiday season. Whether you prefer classical or modern Christmas music, there's something out there that can make the season even more magical.
