The Journey of Independent Filmmaking: From Legal Practice to Artistic Expression
Have you ever made your own film or video? Many individuals dream of creating their own cinematic works, but few actually embark on this journey. In this article, we will explore the experiences of someone who has indeed made films, ranging from big productions in collaboration with studios to small, independent projects for personal enjoyment.
Early Experiences in Filmmaking
During my time as a practicing lawyer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, I had the unusual opportunity to work with a film studio named Lenstory Films. Together, we collaborated on a short film titled "The Humanity Code", an allegorical representation of my personal experiences with the Real Illuminati and The Humanity Party. This was a unique opportunity to combine my legal expertise with a creative endeavor, marking the beginning of my journey in filmmaking.
From Large-Scale Studios to Personal Projects
After my legal career, I shifted to a more independent approach to filmmaking. This change allowed me to explore a wider range of roles, from producer to camera operator, director to editor, all within the framework of budget constraints. One such production, which we affectionately called "Low Budget Film (LBF)", required me to take on the entire spectrum of responsibilities to make the film come to life. Today, I have retired, and I focus on creating smaller, more personal videos purely for my enjoyment.
Creating a 13-Minute Short Film
One of my proudest achievements was writing and directing a 13-minute short film. This project provided an opportunity to delve deep into a narrative, crafting the story, dialogue, and visual storytelling with meticulous detail. The experience was not only challenging but also incredibly rewarding, as it allowed me to express my creativity and share my vision with a broader audience.
Conclusion
From working with large film studios to retiring and focusing on personal projects, my journey in filmmaking has been a fulfilling process. It has allowed me to explore various aspects of the craft and to constantly learn and grow. Whether it’s a short film or a small video, every project brings a unique set of challenges and rewards. If you too have a passion for filmmaking, I encourage you to pursue it and experience the joy of creating your own cinematic art.
