The Journey into Metal: From Black Sabbath to Influential Bands
My love affair with metal music began in 1970 when I first heard the group Black Sabbath. I was just 15 years old, and their debut album launched me on a journey that has since taken me through various metal subgenres, from thrash to black and death metal. Over the years, Black Sabbath and Metalmica have been instrumental in shaping my sound preferences, leading me to explore a wider range of metal music.
Early Influences: Black Sabbath and Metallica
Black Sabbath's 1970 debut album, 'Black Sabbath,' marked the beginning of my heavy metal journey. It was a revelation, and I have loved them ever since. My experience with Black Sabbath paved the way for a broader exploration of metal music. A few years later, Metallica came into the picture with their album 'Master of Puppets.' This album, in particular, introduced me to thrash metal, inspiring me to delve deeper into other subgenres such as black and death metal. This progression from thrash to more experimental metal genres is a crucial part of my musical journey.
The Evolution of Metal Taste
Back in the 1970s when I first heard The MC5, it was a different era in the history of metal. The MC5, along with Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, pioneered the heavier sound that eventually evolved into what we now recognize as metal. However, it wasn't until the 1980s that I truly embraced metal music with full force. It all started with Metal Church - The Dark, which released in 1985, and the Metallica - The Black Album, released in 1991. These albums expanded my tastes and introduced me to the thrash metal scene, which further pushed me to explore black and death metal.
Eventually, my interest in metal music was heightened even more when a friend of a friend brought home the album Adema - Unstable. I was introduced to the band through their song Betrayed Me, which I found appealing. Later, I discovered Violent Delightment and became a fan, leading me to explore other bands like IllNino and Papa Roach. And so, my journey into metal music began, and I started collecting CDs of these bands, keeping them as prized possessions.
Other Influential Bands and Early Exposures
For my 13th birthday, I received a collection of CDs that included tracks from Megadeth, White Zombie, and even Aerosmith. These bands added another layer to my metal experience, and I fell in love with the genre even more.
My musical journey wasn't limited to CDs; it also included watching rock and metal music channels on TV, such as Kerrang! (Freeview) and Kerrang! (Sky). I also used YouTube to explore more metal bands, discovering many that I have come to love. Over time, my love for metal music grew stronger, and I started attending live shows whenever possible.
Concluding Thoughts
The evolution of my love for metal music is a journey that has spanned generations and genres. From Black Sabbath to Metallica, and from thrash to black and death metal, the influence of these bands on my life has been profound. Metal music has not only enriched my life but has also connected me to a global community of metalheads. If you too are on a journey into the world of heavy metal, I would highly recommend starting with Black Sabbath and Metallica. Who knows where it might take you!
