The Golden Era of 80s Music: A Nostalgic Journey with X and Beyond
Join us on a journey through the vibrant and unforgettable 80s music scene. This era was not only about iconic bands and memorable hits but also groundbreaking artists who defied trends and revolutionized genres.
Discovering the 80s Sound
Hey, I'm Cindy, a Pisces from Las Vegas. Puzzles and Chihuahuas are my passions, but the 80s are where my music heart truly belongs. From retrospective collections to new discoveries, the 80s have always been a source of joy and exploration.
While some may view the 80s as a decline for rock and popular music, particularly between 1983 and 1988, my opinion is quite the opposite. Artists like Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie all seemed to take a dive in quality during this period. It was as if music had lost its spark, or so it seemed.
Tom Waits: A Beacon of Hope
Tom Waits, however, was not among the bunch. In fact, he stood out like a beacon of hope, fully embracing classic rock and pop elements while simultaneously pushing boundaries. His albums, including Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Frank’s Wild Years, are not just relics but timeless classics that continue to captivate and impress. These records, with their raw energy and unique storytelling, remain a testament to the power of authentic artistry.
Wall of Voodoo: Pioneering New Wave Country
Then there's Wall of Voodoo, led by Keith from Athens, GA. This American new wave country influenced American electronic band was a true gem of the 80s. Between 1981 and 1987, they were a force to be reckoned with, with Westwood Records lining up one hit after another. The band is not only my favorite from the 80s but also the second favorite in the annals of rock and roll. They're just one beat away from being number one, that's for sure. Other great bands of the era include Dead Can Dance, Joy Division, Dream Syndicate, Thin White Rope, Twelfth Night, Pixies, and Throwing Muses.
Spandau Ballet: A Time Well Remembered
Spandau Ballet was another band that captured my heart during those magical years. Their music was pure, rich in emotion, and perfectly crafted. It's a luxury to listen to music that stands the test of time, making Spandau Ballet a true treasure of the 80s.
If I could choose one band from the 80s, it would undoubtedly be X. My journey with X began when I heard their album 'Under the Big Black Sun' in 1982. The video for 'The Hungry Wolf' on MTV was a game-changer. The raw energy, guitar riffs, and Sulzberger's commanding vocals left me in awe. The entire album was a revelation, and I was determined to seek out more. I purchased everything I could find, and in 1986, I watched them perform live. It was an unforgettable experience that solidified them as my absolute favorites from that era.
In conclusion, the 80s hold a special place in my heart, not just for the raw, glittering music but for the moments that shaped my life and my journey with these incredible bands.
