Renewing Musical Joys: A Transformative Mandolin Experience
After my first year playing the guitar, I truly discovered the magic of this instrument. Intrigued by the guitar, I delved deeper into understanding how to set it up correctly. I bought some guitar tools and began on my Epiphone Special II. The changes were astounding; the guitar felt like a different, more responsive instrument. Most importantly, I realized that many guitar players are unaware of the need for proper setup. Adjustments can significantly enhance the playing experience. It is crucial to either do it yourself or seek help from a professional.
Discovering Forgotten Skills with a Recorder
Another meaningful experience comes from playing a recorder. I picked it up instantly and started playing—it was surprising given that I had never played one before. This skill made me realize that finding instruments you can play intuitively is incredibly valuable. It provides a new set of tools and adds to the diversity of your musical journey.
The Violin Legacy
I have played the violin for nearly six decades and the guitar for around five decades. Despite this long-standing relationship with the violin, my true love lies with this magnificent instrument. However, multiple sclerosis (MS) has made proper bowing challenging. I have a collection of bows ranging from highly sensitive to more easily controlled, but they do not provide enough support.
Unlocking New Horizons with Mandolin
Five years ago, my husband, who is also a musician, surprised me with a mandolin for my birthday. We do not give each other surprise instruments, ensuring that we both test and select them carefully. Initially, I was hesitant about taking up the mandolin, as I had never played one and do not use a pick while playing the guitar. It stood untouched for about two weeks, which I found increasingly unbearable.
Finally, I decided to give it a try. To my delight, the strings are tuned similarly to violin strings, and the neck features frets. Interestingly, using a pick is still necessary, much like the violin. Playing the mandolin has provided me with a similar experience to the violin without the bowing difficulties. I am regaining an important musical outlet due to my husband’s thoughtfulness and compassion.
Thankfully, my husband’s wisdom has played a significant role in this journey, allowing me to explore a new instrument and renew my passion for music. The mandolin experience has not only enriched my musical life but also deepened my appreciation for the joy and connection that comes from playing any instrument.
