Perceptions of Latin America: Impressions, Insights, and Experiences of a Southeast Asian Traveler

As a traveler who has had the privilege of visiting Latin American countries three times in my life, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, I would like to share my unique perspectives and experiences with you.

Impressive Aspects of Latin America

Laid-back and Fun-loving Personalities: One of the most impressive aspects of Latin American culture is the shared laid-back, fun-loving personalities that resonate with my Southeast Asian background. For instance, while watching some Latin American telenovelas (soap operas), I couldn't help but be reminded of Thai lakorns, due to the similar plotlines and vibes.

Open and Friendly People: Latin Americans are known for their warmth and friendliness, making them stand out as the most welcoming group of people I have ever encountered. This is a stark contrast to Southeast Asians, who, despite having a similar fun-loving nature, can be more reserved when it comes to strangers. In Chile, I experienced numerous friendly interactions that left a memorable impression, ultimately making it my favorite country of all those I have visited.

Cultural Influences and Natural Beauty: Indigenous influences and vibrant natural beauty are prominent in countries like Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. This cultural diversity and the breathtaking landscapes, such as Patagonia, the Andes, Inca ruins, and the Amazon, provide a unique and awe-inspiring experience that is unmatched by what is typically known about Southeast Asia.

Asado Argentino: A Delightful Culinary Experience

One of the most memorable experiences while traveling in Latin America was trying Asado Argentino, a traditional barbecue cuisine. I felt so much at home that I even attempted to learn how to cook it in Thailand, where I often find myself craving it after eating Thai cuisine.

Disappointing Aspects of Latin America

Higher Costs and Limited Business Activities: Compared to similar Southeast Asian countries, Latin America seems more expensive. This is largely due to the fact that cities of a similar size in Southeast Asia are more bustling with business activities, leading to more diverse options and lower costs. In Latin America, cities of a similar scale often have fewer business activities and more expensive airlines and food options.

Safety Concerns: Safety is another issue that stands out. While I did not encounter any negative incidents during my travels, going out at night in many Latin American cities feels less safe than in Southeast Asian cities. Many Latin American cities have a reputation for safety concerns, while Southeast Asian cities generally have a more peaceful reputation. However, I managed to walk through the San Telmo area of Buenos Aires and the Sunday Market area, feeling reasonably safe despite the dilapidated buildings, largely due to taking all precautions seriously.

Conclusion

Despite the challenges, the positive aspects of Latin America far outweigh the negatives. Its incredible beauty, cultural diversity, and warm, friendly people make it a place that I cannot wait to return to. Latin America is a destination where one can find fun-loving and friendly people and breathtaking natural beauty, qualities that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

For those planning to visit or considering Latin America as a travel destination, I highly recommend exploring the diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes. While challenges exist, they do not diminish the overall enriching and unforgettable experiences that await.
