Exploring My Musical Journey and Playing with Different Bands
My name is Chelsea, and I am a multifaceted musician who is deeply passionate about music and the different roles I can play in various bands and genres. In this article, I will share about my experiences with different bands, the instruments I play, and how my musical journey has evolved over the years.
Banding In High School
My journey in music began in high school where I started as a sophomore. I am currently a member of my school's symphonic band and play several clarinets, including the Bb Clarinet in Marching Band and the Alto Clarinet and Contra Alto Clarinet in Symphonic Band. I have a particular fondness for the Alto Clarinet due to its versatility in playing both melody and bassline. I also appreciate the Tenor range of this instrument, which adds depth to the music I perform.
Electronic Wind Instruments
Beyond traditional wind instruments, I also perform with an AKAI EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) in the band Seis D’ Nos. This instrument allows me to explore different sounds and create unique musical experiences. The EWI is a self-contained synthesizer that can mimic the sound of various wind instruments, making it a versatile addition to my musical palette.
Traditional and Contemporary Celtic Music
My second band, Keltocalypse, is a Celtic band in central western Oregon. We specialize in playing both traditional and contemporary Celtic music, which is rich in history and culture. As a member, I play multiple instruments, including the tin whistle, low whistle, and harmonica. Although I occasionally try my hand at the flute and spoons, I am still in the process of honing my skills with these instruments. My experience with Kelt Olympia reflects the wide range of musical expressions that exist within the Celtic genre.
Metal/rock Band Embracing Soul
In the realm of metal and rock, I am part of a band called Embracing Soul. Here, I take on dual roles as a bassist and vocalist. The intimate nature of this band allows us to focus on creating dynamic and powerful music. Currently, we are working on a new album, and I am dedicating extra time to improving my bass playing and writing riffs to ensure we can deliver exciting songs. You can find us on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Some of our favorite tunes and covers are available on these platforms.
Personal Singer-Songwriter Career
When I am not immersed in group bands, I enjoy working as a singer-songwriter. Whether performing solo or collaborating with other musicians, I often use acoustic and electric guitars as well as my vocals. I have played bass in a few bands previously, which has made me highly appreciative of the crucial role a skilled bassist plays in a band. I understand the importance of having a good bass player to anchor the music, which is why I strive to continually refine my bass skills.
Multifaceted Musical Career
I am currently a member of three distinct bands, each with its unique style and focus. In the first band, we explore a Muse-like alternative sound, in the second, we delve into contemporary indie music, and the third is a metalcore band. I play bass and provide backing vocals in all of these groups, though I acknowledge that my vocal abilities are not the strongest. However, I am equally comfortable playing guitar and have experience with keyboards and synthesizers as well.
Tribute Band in Northern California
For a different style, I am part of an AC/DC and Judas Priest tribute band in Northern California. Our members include talented musicians like Scott Travis, the drummer for Judas Priest, and Jeff Martin, the lead vocalist for Racer X and Badlands. This band provides a fantastic opportunity to immerse myself in the music of bands that have deeply influenced me. Playing with these legendary musicians, it's an honor to put my own spin on their classics.
Self-Titled Musician
While I am not limited to being part of a band, I can also be found as a self-titled musician. After experiencing the challenges in the metal music scene in Cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix, Arizona, I have accumulated a substantial equipment collection. Starting with my vocal and guitar skills, I have now expanded to writing for movie soundtracks, working with producers who provide me with invaluable experiences and lessons. This journey has helped me understand the importance of versatility in music and the continuous pursuit of improvement.
Through my various musical roles, I have learned to appreciate the diversity and richness of the musical landscape. Whether it's playing in a band or embarking on my solo projects, each experience contributes to my continuous evolution as a musician.
