Can You Be Mean to God as a Non-Believer?

For many individuals, the idea of upsetting God and facing eternal punishment is a constant worry. However, there's a significant portion of the population that does not subscribe to such beliefs. This raises an intriguing question: Can you be mean to God if you don't believe in Him, and if He exists?

My Teenage Rebellion and Relationship with God

Looking back, I can see that my teenage years were marked by rebellion and a defiant attitude not just towards others, but also towards the concept of a higher power. As a teenager, I could be seen as rebelling against societal expectations and the strict rules life seemed to impose. I was hurt and angry, feeling the weight of a childhood where I was bullied. Despite having wonderful parents who tried to shield me, the pain and rebellious spirit were palpable.

During this tumultuous time, I said things like, 'If anyone could go to heaven, why did I want to go?' I left home at 16, pregnant and alone, to figure out life's many challenges. Through a series of personal hardships, including an abusive marriage, I began to reflect on my actions. It was during those sleepless nights that I developed a deeper understanding of and relationship with a higher power, even though I did not attend church.

Living Without Dogma

Do I go to church? Not necessarily. I respect the community aspect and the values some religious practices promote, but finding a perfect fit is not a prerequisite for me. Today, I have a strong spiritual life, praying multiple times a day and placing great belief in the concept of God. This belief is also translated into kindness towards God, which, in turn, awakens kindness within myself and others. It’s a fulfilling and comforting feeling.

While some might seek a theological answer to this question, my experience has shown that being kind to God opens the door to healthy, loving relationships with everyone and everything, including oneself. This shift in mindset brings a sense of safety and peace.

Embracing Kindness and Forgiveness

Whether or not you believe in God, living with kindness and forgiveness can be beneficial. If you've been mean to someone—be it God, a person, or yourself—it's not too late to change. Opening your heart to love and understanding can lead to a happier, healthier life.

So, if you're feeling rebellious or mean towards a higher power, consider the potential impact on your own well-being. It’s never too late to start a new chapter with kindness and forgiveness.

Good Luck

With this reflection, I hope to provide some comfort and guidance to those who may be questioning their relationship with a higher power. Wishing you all the best on your journey towards kindness and understanding.

Good luck.
