A Mentor’s Impact: Life Lessons From My School Teacher

Reflecting on the journey of my engineering years, one person stands out in my memory. Through her guidance, she not only helped me in preparing for placement drives but also became a source of inspiration and strength. Her actions and words resonated deeply, and to this day, I carry the lessons she taught me.

The Mentor’s Role

During my final year of engineering, I was assigned to a Personality Development teacher who was responsible for training all the students for company interviews and communication skills. The goal was to place as many students as possible, as our engineering college was renowned for hiring freshers in bulk.

I was part of a rigorous training program that lasted 3-4 months, aimed at preparing us for the placement drive. Finally, the placement day arrived, and I was rejected in the first round. Standing there, numb and shocked, I couldn’t help but think about what was next. She noticed my distress and approached me, offering words of encouragement and reassurance. She didn’t celebrate with the selected students; instead, she focused on supporting those who had not been chosen.

A Turning Point in Life

After my rejection, I let my feelings get the better of me, avoiding her cabin and her presence. I felt like I had let her down. A few months later, I ran into her on campus, and my heart beat wildly. She understood my situation and invited me to her cabin, where we had a heartfelt conversation. She shared that she hadn’t succeeded in her first placement attempts either, which added a layer of empathy and understanding to our conversation.

She motivated me, telling me to prepare for upcoming placement drives. That interaction was a turning point. The mentor who previously felt my failure became the motivation I needed. She understood the importance of being there for those who felt down, and her words had a profound impact on me.

Overcoming Setbacks

I took her advice to heart and participated in another placement drive. This time, I was rejected again, but her words kept me motivated. Clearing four rounds for another placement, I was finally placed. Overjoyed, I went to her cabin and handed her my offer letter, showing my respect by touching her feet— a traditional gesture in India.

This experience set the stage for further success. I went on to clear interviews for a tech giant but was once again rejected. Her words of encouragement spurred me on, and I secured a spot in a big company where only three students from my college were selected.

Lessons Learned

This mentor taught me invaluable lessons. She showed me that failing is an opportunity to learn and grow, and those who need support the most are those who have failed. She reminded me to be humble and understanding, as we never know what someone is going through. Her support and motivation transformed my life. She instilled in me the belief that my words can inspire and change people.

She also taught me the importance of respect and how to earn it through actions and words. Today, wherever I am in life, it is because of her constant support and motivation. I am deeply grateful for her and hope that someday she reads this and finds joy in it. You have not only guided but also inspired a highflyer, Akanksha ma'am.

Conclusion

A true mentor is someone who sees potential in you and encourages you to reach it. My school teacher Akanksha ma'am was that mentor, and I will always be grateful for her unwavering support. To you, the world needs more people like you.
